Hi. I'm kind of new to using some of the software I will mention so let me know if I'm making a mistake. This problem is really for OCD people LOL. I use the following method because I haven't found a dvd authoring software that can handle mkv and subtitles. If you know of one please feel free to discontinue reading and reply the name of the software. As of now this process works the best.
1. I downloaded this from the internets:
"Tekkon_Kinkreet_(2006).DVD(H264.AC3_5.1ch)(1920x816)[KAA][731C8D32].mkv", badass movie by the way.
2. I wanted to put it on DVD with the subs so I use MKVExtractGui to get the .ass file and the two fonts tinbird.ttf and iwantv2.ttf.
3. I convert the mkv sans subtitles using aieesoft to an avi file.
This all works out fine.
4. Now I use AVIReComp to hardcode the subs into the avi file. However, the kana and romaji font names called out in the .ass sub file do not render correctly. All I get is "????????????" in my video render preview at the ED. This is strange because the original mkv works great showing the kanji using vlc or cccp/mpc.
Makbe MKVExtractGui didn't see all of the fonts. I'm not sure. That's why I'm asking. I hope one of you a/v gurus read this.

Thanks,
op.

Re-encoding is generally looked down upon in these parts.

But anyway, that AVIReComp or whatever probably doesn't support unicode, which is why you get question marks. That, or you're running XP and need the Asian Text support pack - I dunno if this is built in in some software.

The biggest mistake I noticed, however, was... why re-encode twice? Just do the hardsubbing the first time. Re-encoding twice just destroys even more quality.

Also, use of VLC is not welcome here. It sucks, and it's annoying when people come running with their petty issues which they wouldn't get if they used proper players - WHICH you already have. Why not use it exclusively?

Anyway, have fun with your doomed project...
