The title of this article begins with a capital letter due to technical limitations. The correct title is eDonkey.

The eDonkey2000 network (the eD2k network) was invented by the company MetaMachine a couple of years ago. The network has been known by its heavy supply of various types of files, all from movies, music, programs, to books and more. At the launch, eDonkey was the sole client to the network, however the monopoly was fatally broken by the introduction of eMule.

A thing that a lot of the users finds useful, is its extensive indexing system, there is built for the clients to the ed2k network. Meaning, that there exists pages on net, where one can find ed2k links of all kinds based on various categories. If you find a file you wish to download, you simply click the eD2k link and the verified file will automatically be located and added to the download list in your client.

High ID and Low ID

The eD2k network has a HighID/LowID system. If your incoming port (4662 by default) is not reachable, you will receive a LowID. If everything is fine, you will get a HighID.

Having a LowID is similar to having a yellow light in BitTorrent: you will not be able to connect to other LowID clients, and thus your overall speed will be slower. Please see the port forwarding article for details on how to solve that.

List of servers

The eD2k network requires you to connect to a server to operate properly. This is a short list of a few servers:

  • Razorback 2: 195.245.244.243 port 4661 (usually has the most users, around one million) [NOW OFFLINE]
  • Byte Devils: 63.246.128.150 port 3306
